Every day our local government and animal control agencies end the lives of feral and stray cats and kittens. They use gentle words like...euthanize...put to sleep...put down. But whatever the words, they are needlessly killing thousands of healthy, useful, beautiful animals. No other wild animal receives this harsh treatment.

They typical feral cat is born outside and has never lived in a home, never been touched by a human. Distrustful and afraid of humans, they are unsocialized and unadoptable. They live in family groups known as colonies in "territories" that are scent marked and the food the that territory is theirs. They can live without humans on the rodents that multiply faster than they do. They inhabit a useful niche in our ecology by keeping the rodent population under control. "Non-toxic, self sustaining rodent control," a maintenance man told us.

Yet animal control continues to respond to the feral cat population with a ruthless policy of extermination. Inhumane and costly, this genocidal program has been in place since 1916 when there were an estimated half a million cats in the United States. Now estimates of the feral cat population are 80 to 100 million. Clearly the program is not working.

And, to make matters worse --- this cruel, wasteful, ineffective and completely unnecessary program is funded by your TAX DOLLARS.

We would rather just work with the cats and our dedicated volunteers but it has become painfully clear to us, as our managed colonies grow, that we must become political. Trap, Neuter, Return must become law in Clark County and its neighboring cities!

Thirty Two States and numerous other municipalities, including Washington D.C. and the Boardwalks of Atlantic City have proven that TNR works. RENO, Nevada uses it! We need it here in Las Vegas / Clark County! We hope you will tell your Legislators how you feel. They need to hear from you. The cats and kittens need you to act!
